Best Exercises to Lose WeightMany of us embark on a fitness program with the primary goal being to lose weight, and we look for the best exercises to lose weight. This is a great goal to have and we wholeheartedly support our clients in this endeavor! However, we want to remind our clients that weight loss must be done at a safe rate and that losing weight is not the only judge of whether you are seeing benefits from your exercise routine. We love any goal that gets our clients to make going to the gym a more regular routine in their lives because you’ll see so many other benefits, like improved muscle tone and balance, more energy, and better heart health.

That said, there are some exercises that are typically more effective when it comes to weight loss compared to others. So, what are the best exercises to lose weight? Cardio exercise gets your heart rate up and the calories burning. The method of cardio doesn’t make a difference — your heart rate is more important. You can jog, bike, roller skate, kickbox, ski, row, hike, etc. Anything that gets your heart rate up means you’re burning more calories.

One myth that persists in the fitness community is that there is a “fat burning zone” where you keep your heart rate in 60-75% of your max heart rate and this is supposed to burn the most calories. This is simply not true. The higher your heart rate, the more calories you’ll burn. This is not to say you should exercise at a higher intensity than you are comfortable with, however.

When it comes to cardio, there is a more effective way to go about it when you’re looking for higher calorie burn. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. This method of exercising involves changing the intensity of your training throughout the workout. For example, on the treadmill you might do a light jog for 1 minute and then sprint for 10 seconds for the duration of your workout. This change in intensity burns more calories during the duration of the workout than if you just stayed at the same pace the entire time. HIIT can be applied to any mode of cardio. Just change up the intensity as you go along!
