Once you’ve made the decision to hire a fitness trainer, you’ll have to shop around to find a trainer who fits your needs. Fitness trainers are all different, and it’s important to find the right trainer for you so you get the most out of your workouts. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you hire a fitness trainer.
- What’s their personality like? Some people respond better to a drill sergeant-type motivator who can push them to their limit. Others like their trainers to be highly encouraging. Think about the type of motivation that you respond to and ask your fitness trainer what their style is.
- What are your goals? Fitness trainers with credentials should be capable of providing you with a wide array of workouts. However, if you are working toward a specific goal, you might ask what type of training your fitness trainer specializes in. Many instructors specialize or have an interest in a specific area of exercise, like yoga, Pilates, high-intensity training, sports conditioning, TRX, endurance training, and so on. If you have a particular interest, you should see how much your fitness trainer knows about it.
- How will your progress be tracked? Making sure you are progressing is an important part of any fitness program. If your trainer doesn’t have any sort of system set up to help you see the difference your workout sessions are making, then they might not be the right fit for you.
- Group or personal fitness sessions? Some individuals respond better to training in a group setting. Working out with others can fuel a sense of competition and help you feel motivated to push your limits. Some fitness trainers offer small group training sessions where you can still get personalized instruction, but with the added bonus of a little group competition. If you think this type of workout would benefit you, ask your instructor if they do group fitness sessions.
